Read the letter to the Minister responsible for CMHC, the Hon. Jean-Yves Duclos (August 2018)

The National Housing Strategy contained $500 million for the Federal Community Housing Initiative, a new rental subsidy program for community housing providers whose federally administered Operating Agreements expire between April 1, 2016 and March 31, 2027. This new program is being rolled out in two phases – the first phase will extend rental subsidies to 2020, while Phase 2 will extend subsidies until 2027.

Based on a CMHC discussion paper and an in-person meeting with CMHC in July 2018, the we wrote to the Minister responsible for CMHC, the Hon. Jean-Yves Duclos, to share our thoughts and concerns with several of the ideas proposed.

The federal government is about to undertake a public consultation on Phase 2 that will help inform the policy framework for the program between 2020 and 2027. Community housing providers will soon receive a survey to share their views on how Phase 2 should operate.

Community housing providers are encouraged to use the contents of this letter in sharing their own views with CMHC on the Phase 2 consultation survey and process.
