Tenant Leadership Group

In May 2020, CHRA launched the Tenant Leadership Group, a national initiative designed to increase the capacity of tenant leadership across Canada. This program is made possible through a generous contribution of the Community Housing Transformation Centre.

What is the Tenant Leadership Group?

The Tenant Leadership Group is an initiative that will provide training, resources, and leadership development to a group of approximately 25 aspiring tenant leaders across Canada. This development will culminate in several face to face sessions to be held in conjunction with the CHRA Annual Congress taking place in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador in late April 2021. Through this program, individuals will gain valuable skills and experiences to better enable them to speak on behalf of the tenant community. A certain number of spots in the group will be set aside for Indigenous participants.

Who is eligible?

  • any individual currently over the age of 18

  • resides in a rental unit in Canada

  • preference will be given to tenants living in community housing (non-profit, social, co-op, supportive, or other forms of community housing)

What is involved and expected?

The Tenant Leadership Group is designed for aspiring tenant representatives and leaders who want to gain valuable skills and experiences to better enable them to speak on behalf of the tenant community. In order to develop these skills and leadership capabilities, members of the group are expected to participate and review materials provided through the program. The program is expected to run from June 2020 to April 2021. During this period, it is expected that participants devote approximately 5-10 hours per month to the program, although additional time is encouraged. This work and engagement will be done virtually, and as such, participants must have access to a computer (with functional audio), internet, and phone.

Members of the group will also be invited to participate in the 2021 CHRA National Congress on Housing and Homelessness taking place from April 27-29, 2021 in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. At Congress, they will participate in programming unique to the Leadership Group, and the broader Congress program.

Following the completion of the program, it is expected that participants will take up tenant leadership roles in their communities, regions, and even nationally. This may take many forms, such as: consulting on government initiatives, setting up or leading tenant bodies, advocating for tenant issues, or a range of other possible leadership roles.

Please note that there is no fee to participate in this program, and CHRA will cover all costs related to attending the 2021 National Congress.

How Do I Apply?

As this program is intended for aspiring tenant leaders, applications will be evaluated on leadership potential and future commitment. You can apply through one of two ways:

  1. You can apply online
  2. CHRA can mail a copy of the application form (.pdf), and you can fill in a paper application. If you’d like CHRA to mail you a form, contact Dominika Krzeminska at 613-594-3007, x 10.

Send your applications to CHRA no later than June 5, 2020. CHRA will evaluate applications that week, and all applicants will be advised of their status shortly after.
