Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, CHRA has shared a number of concerns and recommendations raised by CHRA members with CMHC and the federal government. However, in order to capture the full scope of short and long-term recommendations, CHRA has prepared a letter to the federal Minister responsible for housing, Ahmed Hussen, summarizing key suggestions on how to assist housing providers during this crisis, and in its aftermath. As the letter states, the pandemic has reinforced the point that access to proper housing remains the most important means to protect public health, and therefore proper supports need to be put in place.
On May 13, Minister Hussen met with the Canadian Alliance of Non-Profit Housing Associations (CANPHA) and with a group of national affordable housing and homeless associations in order to discuss the ideas in the letter, as well as other short and long term housing supports.
Feel free to share this letter and its ideas with your local Member of Parliament. Together, let’s work to build a stronger community housing sector now and after this pandemic has passed.
