Today, CHRA publicly released two documents related to the National Housing Strategy. These 2 documents include:
a) A response (PDF) to the “National Housing Strategy Act” contained in Bill C-97, which was introduced in the House of Commons in April 2019. This Act, which recognizes a progressive right to housing, was originally promised in the November 2017 National Housing Strategy. Although CHRA is supportive of the legislation, CHRA is recommending amendments to strengthen the bill.
b) The Canadian Alliance of Non-Profit Housing Associations (CANPHA) has drafted Key Principles (PDF) to help inform the development of the ‘Canada Housing Benefit’ first announced in the National Housing Strategy. This $4 billion program is intended to provide housing affordability support to those in need. As federal, provincial and territorial officials develop the details regarding the program, CANPHA has submitted the following Key Principles document to help inform the framework of this new program.
CHRA will continue to advocate and influence the development of these and other components of the National Housing Strategy.
