Aboriginal Housing Management Association

AHMA is a grassroots organization made up of 55 members that are all Indigenous Housing and Service providers across British Columbia. AHMA members represent over 8000 Indigenous families and offer over 35 different wraparound services. AHMA is the first Indigenous Housing authority in Canada, created for Indigenous Peoples by Indigenous Peoples.

Urban, Rural and Northern Indigenous Housing Strategy.

AHMA is celebrating our 25th year of leading the change for Indigenous affordable housing. We are proud of our members’ success in serving Urban Indigenous people in BC. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, AHMA has expanded our services in the past two years and is leading the way for members and government with a new Provincial Urban, Rural and Northern Indigenous Housing Strategy.

Youth Empowerment

Our focus on youth and future generations is always at the forefront of our work. This past year, AHMA and CMHC initiated an innovative partnership. CMHC provided $250,000 for AHMA to create a new Housing Internship for Indigenous Youth program. Our goal is to give Indigenous youth opportunities that provide work experience and skills training to help improve housing in their communities and empower them to pursue longer-term employment in the housing sector.

We are always interested in building relationships to learn from and influence other organizations. We look forward to connecting with all attendees at the 2022 National Congress on Housing and Homelessness!

With its head office in Ottawa and regional service centres in Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver, the Agency for Co-operative Housing administers the agreements between Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and 500 housing co-operatives. Risk-based, data-driven and client-focused, the Agency has pioneered a benchmarking process for contrasting the performance of each client with that of its peers in such areas as administrative costs, vacancy loss, arrears and bad debts, contributions to a capital replacement reserve and spending on maintenance and capital repairs. Rental charges are compared to local rental-market averages as well as to those of similar housing co-operatives. These comparisons are based on data from an online annual report completed by the client’s auditor drawing information from audited financial statements and other aspects of the client’s operations. These data feed automatically into a purpose-build database that facilitates comparisons among clients over various time periods. The results are returned to each client in illustrated, plain-language reports that identify problems, propose solutions and assist with planning. Confidentiality is maintained through password-protected filing and information shared only with the client’s designated contact.

At Enbridge Gas we have helped hundreds of affordable housing providers, building managers and residents across Ontario find ways to become more energy-efficient, cost effective and comfortable. Each program is thoughtfully designed with the intention of improving the quality of life of our customers.

The Home Winterproofing program is designed to keep energy bills down and offer more comfort to Ontario households. We offer free residential improvements, including insulation and a smart thermostat. Also, Indigenous communities are valued partners in this programming. Our Affordable Multi-Family Housing program offers financial incentives to help identify and implement energy efficiency initiatives and is designed to help participants save energy, cut operating costs and reduce carbon emissions.

Our Savings by Design Affordable Housing program encourages builders to design and construct homes and buildings that are more energy efficient than required by the Ontario Building Code. Homeward Trust is the system planner organization responsible for Edmonton’s local efforts to prevent and end homelessness on behalf of all orders of government. Homeward Trust, along with sector partners, coordinate and deliver programs that provide individuals and families with stable and safe housing and necessary support to end the cycle of homelessness.

Homelessness is a complex issue that no single program or agency can solve alone. To prevent, reduce and end homelessness, governments and civil society organizations must collaborate and stay fully committed to that goal.

Our work is grounded in the belief that everyone has the right to a home and that our communities are stronger, safer, and more vibrant when homelessness is addressed. The solution to homelessness is housing.
