Housing Funding Announcements
Update on Canada´s Economic Action Plan
The following announcements regarding support for affordable housing have been made:
Initial Plan
Canada´s Economic Action Plan 2009 commits $2.075 billion to affordable housing. The $2.075 billion is to be spent as following:
- $1 billion for new housing and renovations to existing social housing
- $850 million will be cost-shared with the provinces
- $150 million will be delivered directly to federally administered social housing
- $400 million for housing for low-income seniors
- $75 million for new housing for people with disabilities
- $200 million for new housing and renovations in the north
- $400 million for new housing and renovations on-reserves
- $125 million will be delivered by CMHC to create new housing
- $125 million will be delivered to repair and renovate existing federally-assisted social housing
- $150 will be delivered by Indian and Northern Affairs Canada for lot servicing, renovations, new construction of high-density multi-unit dwellings, and renovations for conversions of band-owned housing to private ownership
Agreements with Provinces and Territories
The following agreements under Canada's Economic Action Plan have been made with the Provinces and Territories. The total commitment includes funding from the extension of housing and homelessness programs announced in September 2008 by the federal government as well as funding from the Economic Action Plan.
So far, the federal government has committed $1.436 billion from the Economic Action Plan to the Provinces and Territories:
- $1.217 billion for new housing or renovations to existing social housing
- $69 million for housing for seniors and people with disabilities
- $150 million for northern housing
06/25/09 - A commitment of $96 million was made to the Canada Alberta Affordable Housing Program Agreement and will be matched by the Province under Canada´s Economic Action Plan. The total commitment from the federal and provincial government to the Affordable Housing Program Agreement is $386 million.
06/09/09 - A commitment of $535 million was made to the Canada Ontario Affordable Housing Program Agreement and will be matched by the Province under Canada´s Economic Action Plan. The total commitment is $1.2 billion. (more...)

05/29/09 - A commitment of $37 million was made to the Canada New Brunswick Affordable Housing Program Agreement and will be matched by the Province under Canada´s Economic Action Plan. The total commitment is $99 million.(more...)
05/22/09 - A commitment of $29 million was made to the Canada Newfoundland and Labrador Affordable Housing Program Agreement and will be matched by the Province under Canada´s Economic Action Plan. The total commitment is $93 million.
05/22/09 - A commitment of $4 million was made to the Canada P.E.I. Affordable Housing Program Agreement and will be matched by the Province under Canada´s Economic Action Plan. The total commitment is $13 million. (more...)
05/22/09 - A commitment of $55 million was made to the Canada Northwest Territories Affordable Housing Program Agreement and will be matched by the Territory under Canada´s Economic Action Plan. The total commitment is $117 million.
05/22/09 - A commitment of $106 million was made to the Canada Nunavut Affordable Housing Program Agreement. $6 million is for housing for seniors or people with disabilities and is matched by the Territory and $100 million is for northern housing. The total commitment is $117 million.
05/22/09 - A commitment of $51 millions was made to the Canada Yukon Affordable Housing Program Agreement. $50 million is for northern housing and $1 million for housing for seniors and people with disabilities. 05/19/09 - A commitment of $66 million was made to the Canada Saskatchewan Affordable Housing Program Agreement and will be matched by the Province under Canada´s Economic Action Plan. The total commitment is $161 million.

10/26/09 - A commitment of $269 million was made to the Affordable Housing Initiative and renovation programs in Quebec and will be matched by the Province under Canada´s Economic Action Plan. The total commitment from the federal and provincial governments is $820 million.

10/18/09 - $5 million for BC Housing for upgrades to Evergreen Terrace in Greater Victoria

06/24/09 - $24 million for construction and renovation of 282 new units in 22 buildings in downtown Winnipeg under the HOMEWorks! Strategy
06/24/09 - Manitoba Shelter Benefit will increase by $15 per month for 1,100 households
06/24/09 - Portable Housing Benefit of up to $200 per month for 600 individuals with mental health issues
